Government Data on Your San Francisco LASIK Provider

San Francisco laser eye surgery centers do everything in their power to present a flawless image to the public. Any hint of impropriety would reflect negatively on the potential safety and efficacy of their San Francisco vision correction practice.

Unfortunately, things are not all roses in LASIK San Francisco land. But the vast majority of San Francisco eye laser surgery patients don't know this. Although they may have an intuitive feeling that something's not quite right with their San Francisco LASIK surgery doctor, they have no objective source of data to confirm this.

So what's the recourse for the prospective San Francisco laser vision correction patient? Look to the state and federal government, who've compiled at least some data on the performance of surgeons in the San Francisco laser eye surgery market. Here are a few of the most important government sources:

  1. www.medbd.ca.gov/Lookup.htm
Probably the single most important information on your San Francisco eye laser surgery doc can be found here. The California Medical Board governs the behavior of all the State's physicians, including LASIK San Francisco surgeons. Click on the page, enter your San Francisco laser vision correction surgeon's name in full, then read all about her: where she got her MD (some San Francisco LASIK surgery docs will hide this data when they've attended a third tier medical school); whether her license is current; and most importantly, whether she has been subjected to disciplinary action by the State.

  1. www.ftc.gov
This is the U.S. Federal Trade Commission website. Among other things, the FTC regulates trade across state lines, including LASIK services, which some out of state companies provide in the LASIK San Francisco market. At least one of these companies has entered a consent order with the FTC promising to cease deceptive advertising practices. If this is the San Francisco laser vision correction practice you're planning to use, you should think twice.
  2. www.fda.gov/cdrh/LASIK/lasers.htm
This is the Federal Drug Administration's approved LASIK laser page. Here you'll find the true story on the performance of Wavefront lasers used in the San Francisco LASIK surgery market. You'll discover that, notwithstanding the claims of at least one San Francisco eye laser surgery provider, some lasers performed worse than others in the FDA clinical studies for true Wavefront guided LASIK treatment. The VISX S4 achieved far superior 20/20 or better outcomes compared to the other two FDA-approved laser, a fact that some San Francisco laser eye surgery doctors do their best to hide.

The three government sources above are maintained for the benefit of you, the patient. If you are considering LASIK in San Francisco, you would do well to study these web databases. And if you have any questions on how to access them, please contact us at 800.454.2747.
