Specializing in Wavefront LASIK in the San Francisco Bay Area

Nearly half the residents of the San Francisco Bay Area suffer from some kind of vision error, owing to an imperfectly-shaped eye, that prevents light from focusing on the retina.

This focusing problem can cause blurred vision, requiring patients to wear glasses or contact lenses which, in turn, causes unexpected and sometimes severe consequences for patients' ocular health and quality of life.

VISION PROBLEMS

The three primary vision errors are nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism, each the result of a specific eye shape that differs from normal. (If you're over the age of 40, and your reading vision is poor, you should also be aware of this condition).

OUR LASER VISION CORRECTION SERVICES

The objective of laser vision correction is to reshape the cornea to eliminate these errors, thus enabling light to focus on the retina, freeing you of your glasses and contact lenses. At ScottHyver Visioncare, we offer four primary types of laser vision correction:

Classic LASIK Classic PRK
Wavefront LASIK Wavefront PRK

LASIK AND PRK

LASIK and PRK are procedures; that is, they are different surgical methods by which Dr. Hyver prepares the eye to receive the laser. In LASIK, he creates a corneal flap — the hallmark of LASIK — then lifts the flap, treats the underlying tissue with the laser, and restores the flap, whereupon it heals. In PRK, he instead removes the cornea's outer membrane, called the epithelium layer, applies the laser to the newly-exposed tissue, over which a new layer of epithelium then grows in the days following the treatment.

WAVEFRONT-GUIDED TREATMENT

The terms Classic and Wavefront refer to information technologies (i.e. data, software and firmware) that control where and how the laser operates on your eye. Because Wavefront technology provides a more accurate and comprehensive measure of your vision error — and thus a more precise path for the laser to follow — Wavefront LASIK and Wavefront PRK patients typically enjoy better distance vision, day and night.

Based upon your prescription, corneal geometry, and other factors, Dr. Hyver will determine at your consultation which of the four types of laser vision correction is the safest and most effective way to treat your vision error.

Dr. Hyver may recommend, for example, Wavefront LASIK, which is the most popular type of laser vision correction, owing to its generally superb post-operative visual results and rapid recovery.

Alternatively, if your cornea is unusually thin or asymmetrical, Dr. Hyver may recommend Wavefront PRK. Although the recovery period is longer, the ultimate visual results of Wavefront PRK are often equal to or in some cases better than those of Wavefront LASIK.
