Your eye may be covered with a dressing or eye patch initially to keep it clean and reduce the risk of infection. Continue wearing it for as long as your care instructions specify. Before you leave, you will be given a full set of aftercare directions to guide your recovery.

Managing Common Symptoms: Redness, Grittiness, and Blurry Vision

Although IOL surgery is a very common procedure with a low rate of complications, some after-effects are expected. These can include:

  • Blurred vision that gradually improves, though many patients notice increased clarity almost immediately after surgery.
  • Halos and glare around lights at night, particularly in the early stages of recovery.
  • Mild itching, grittiness, or watering of the eye, as well as some redness.

These symptoms are a normal consequence of surgery and should lessen quickly, eventually disappearing altogether. You will be provided with a protective eye shield to wear for the first few nights to prevent rubbing during sleep. Sunglasses worn during the day can help reduce glare, and lubricating eye drops can be applied as directed to keep the eye comfortable.

Complete recovery and full stabilisation of vision typically take between four and six weeks as the eye adjusts to the new lens and the cornea heals. Here is what to expect at each stage:

  • Days 1 to 3: Vision may remain blurred as swelling subsides. Glare and halos around lights at night are common, and the eye may water or feel gritty. These are normal signs of the healing process.
  • Week 1: Vision will begin to clear and improve. A follow-up appointment will typically be scheduled to check eye pressure and overall progress.
  • Weeks 2 to 6: Eyesight continues to stabilise and sharpen. Once the eye is fully healed, a new eye test may be recommended to confirm whether any updated prescription is needed.

Essential Dos and Don’ts: Activities to Avoid After Surgery

The weeks following surgery are important for a successful outcome. There are several things you should do during this period:

  • Follow all guidelines and aftercare instructions provided by your clinical team.
  • Rest for at least the first day and avoid over-exertion.
  • Wear sunglasses outdoors, particularly in bright or windy conditions, and an eye shield at night for the first few days.
  • Take prescribed pain relief if you experience discomfort.
  • Use your supplied eye drops as directed to reduce swelling, lubricate the eye, and prevent infection.

There are also several things to avoid:

  • Do not drive until your vision has returned to a safe level.
  • Avoid swimming or getting water in your eye for around two to four weeks, especially dirty or soapy water.
  • Do not rub or press on the eye, even if it feels irritated.
  • Avoid applying eye makeup or lotions near the eye.
  • Avoid contact sports and heavy lifting.
  • Try not to bend from the waist, as this can increase pressure on the eye.

Your clinical team will advise you when it is safe to return to normal daily activities.

When to Call Your Doctor: Signs of IOL Complications

Recovery is almost always straightforward, particularly when aftercare instructions are followed carefully. However, contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following:

  • Blurred vision that does not begin to improve within a few days of surgery.
  • Severe or worsening pain.
  • Difficulty focusing, dark or bright patches in your vision, or significant sensitivity to bright lights.
  • Noticeable discharge from the eye or increasing redness.
  • Flashes of light or a sudden increase in floaters, which can be a sign of retinal detachment and should be assessed urgently.
